Correcting a Gummy Smile with Botox
The display of excessive gingival tissue upon smiling, or a “gummy smile”, is both an oral hygiene and cosmetic issue. Those who suffer from this condition may feel self conscious about smiling. Most dentists would agree that a gummy smile shows 4mm or more of gum tissue and the tooth size to gum tissue ratio is out of proportion. The most common cause of excessive gum exposure when smiling is over-contraction of the upper lip elevator muscles. Although there are several surgical techniques for correction of hyperfunctional upper lip elevator muscles, they are all fairly invasive, irreversible and expensive.
Botox has been shown to effectively treat the appearance of a gummy smile and is a much more manageable procedure than surgery. The administration of two or more injections on either side of the mouth allows these muscles on the face to relax and the lips to begin to cover up the gums with a natural appearance , thereby creating a more aesthetically appealing smile.
At North Idaho Dental Group, one of our three Botox trained doctors will do a simple smile analysis appointment to determine if this is a good treatment for you. Call today for a free consultation 1-208-667-8282
